Creolization in English Speaking Caribbean Countries.
As we know from the previous post, creolization can be seen in many different aspects of culture, music, food, dance etc.
The first example of creolization we are going to explore from the textbook, " Tour de Force: A Musical Journey of the Caribbean," is Calypso. Trinidad and Tobago Calypso is explained in this text as an evolution of a mix of French Caribbean, European, African and probably Venezuelan music. Calypso is described as a " Vehicle for Social Protest."

Below is a video of the sweets sounds of Calypso. I chose this video because it is a combination of music from different artist, which allows you a chance to choose which artist and songs you like. It is like a one stop shop.Smithsonian Institution. (n.d.). Quelbe! Music of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Smithsonian Institutute. Here is a video of the," Stanley and the ten sleepless knights" band. I chose this video because there is the music in the background and throughout the video along with Stanley one of the giants in quelbe music explaining this genre and his experiences in being an artist. It helped me understand more about it and I hope it will help you too. Doesn't sound a lot like Bahamian Music?

Another example of creolization which is not in the book is Fou-Fou. In the article Cultural survival through cuisine by Megan Bridgeland. It is explained that after slaves were taken and brought to the new world. They continued some of their practices and eating habits, in this case it's the making of fou-fou. This is a soft dough that is made by boiling yam, cassava and plantain.

Here's a video of the process of making Fou-Fou. I chose this video because this is a quick short video that has all he information you need to make Caribbean Fou-Fou. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!
